Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers can be readily converted to afford many different materials having varying functionalities and physical properties because of the presence of the reactive anhydride moities. Recently we have found that the styrene maleic anhydride copolymers can spontaneously react, with various oxazolines at room temperature to produce the modified polymers having much different polarities. In this report, we would like to elucidate the structure of the oxazoline-modified styrene maleic anhydride copolymer and to study its mechanistic pathways by employing various monomeric and polymeric model compounds techniques.
