The structure 1, assigned by Paknikar and Kirtany (Photochem Photobiol, 35, 1982, 741) to one of the products, 3-(2'-hydroxy-C-methoxyphenyl)-4-phenyl-2(5H)-furanone obtained by the photolysis of 6-methoxybenzofuran-2,3-dione and styrene, has been confirmed by synthesis.
