The content of styrene in polystyrene cups was determined by purge-and-trap followed by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC)-flame ionization detection (FID). Styrene analysis was performed on a Star 3400 gas chromatograph equipped with a slit/splitless injector and flame ionization detector. Polymeric resins were formed by the repetition of one or more basic units called monomers. The results show that successive extraction steps can continuously extract styrene monomer from the sample in progressively lower amounts trending to a background value, suggesting that the release of the monomer results mainly from depolymerization processes, rather than residual amounts originally present.
