Abstract
Polymethyl methacrylate microspheres (PMMA) with clear surface whose diameter close to 1 mu m were synthesized by using new soap-free emulsion polymerization. When cosolvent (ethanol), electrolyte (NaCl) and competing solvent of monomer (toluene) were added into the soap-free emulsion polymerizing system of methyl methacrylate (MMA), the diameter of PMMA could increase while its distribution did not change. The dynamic behaviors of polymerization were studied; the affecting factors to the diameter and distribution of microspheres such as the amount and adding period of toluene, and the amount of ethanol, NaCl, initiator and monomer were investigated. The results showed that the presence of ethanol and NaCl made the diameter and distribution of PMMA increase, but the presence of toluene could avoid the distribution increase coming from ethanol and NaCl, and could make the diameter of PMMA be close to 1 mu m in the same time. The results also showed that the diameter and distribution of PMMA increased with increasing monomer and initiator concentration.
