Abstract
Copolymers were prepared by free radical polymerization in dioxane for 3 h at 60°C, using AIBN as the initiator. After isolation and reprecipitation into a large amount of methanol, they were dried at 90°C in a vacuum oven for 14 days. The low drying temperature was chosen to avoid inadvertent anhydride formation from carboxyl groups. Infrared spectra of the copolymer films were taken by a Digilab FTS-IR spectrometer. Sixty-four scans were signal-averaged at a resolution of 2 cm-1. The glass-transition temperatures were determined with the use of a Perkin-Elmer differential scanning calorimeter (DSC-7) at a heating rate of 10°C/min and taken at the midpoint of the abrupt heat-capacity jump. Tg values for the copolymers are indeed higher than are the Tg of either PS or PAA.
