Abstract
A mixture of titanium compounds (TiCl4, Ti(OEt)4, or (η-C5H,5)TiCl3) with methylaluminoxane catalyzes the polymerization of styrene, even above room temperature, to the pure syndiotactic polystyrene, which has a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn= 2). Pure syndiotactic polymers are also obtained with ring-substituted styrenes. Monomer reactivity is enhanced by electron-releasing substituents on the aromatic ring. © 1988, American Chemical Society.
