Burns by hydrofluoric acid have certain characteristics: intense pain results which may be delayed for several hours, and which, in the absence of treatment, may persist for several days; a tough coagulated area of skin is formed at the site of application of the acid; the action of the acid is progressive, and destruction of tissue beneath the leathery layer of skin occurs over a period of several days. Treatment consists of repeated applications of a paste made of glycerine or liquid paraffin, and magnesium oxide, followed by the inj. of a sterile 10% soln. of calcium gluconate (Sandoz) into and below the burned area where there is any whitening of the skin. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Auth. summ
