Abstract
Marine algae and seagrasses have been important resources for Northwest Coast First Peoples for millennia. They provide food, materials and medicines, and feature in peoples' narratives and traditions. Bull kelp (Nereocystis) and giant kelp (Macrocystis), red laver (Porphyra spp.), and eelgrass (Zostera marina) are some of the major species people have relied upon. This presentation will introduce people to these and other culturally significant species of marine plants.
