An investigation was made of samples cemented together from four glass strips 240 mm long and 10 mm wide with both the thickness of the cement (0.01-0.30 mm) and the thickness of the outer glass strip (0.50-1.75 mm) varied. For the cement, cold-setting ED-5 resin was used. Ten parts by weight of resin were mixed with two parts by weight of MGF-9 polyester and one part by weight of polyethylenepolyamine hardener. For complete hardening of the resin and subsequent polymerization the samples were held at 60degC for 36 h. The heat treatment decreased the fracture toughness of the resin but substantially increased the reproducibility of the results. The thickness of the cement was controlled by spacers with fixing of the total thickness of the packet. After the tests the thickness of the cement was determined more accurately and the edge of the sample was ground and examined under the microscope. The cemented strips used for preparing the samples were strengthened by etching in hydrofluoric acid with an approximately 0.2-mm thick layer dissolved.
