Abstract
We design a detector for identifying protons and deuterons by using the different energy losses in a thin plastic scintillator. We develop a plastic scintillator by adding PPO (2.5-diphenyloxazolyl) and POPOP (1,4-bis-2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)) in polystyrene. A weight concentration ratio is 100 : 1 : 0.05 for fluoresscence (styrene : PPO : POPOP). The efficiency of the plastic scintillator was found to be 99.92 +/- 0.08 % compared to that of BC-408 by using cosmic ray. We developed thin plastic scintillators with a thickness of 300 pra and measured the optical properties. We also studied the discrimination power between protons and deuterons produced in p+Cu reactions at 50 MeV.
