Abstract
A method was developed to determine the concentration of chain transfer agent inside polymer particles during reaction using instantaneous molecular weight distributions. For highly active chain transfer agents with low water solubility, the chain transfer reaction may be diffusion limited. This methodology provides insight into whether diffusion limitations exist. Data for the system styrene/n-dodecanethiol quantitatively demonstrates the extent of the diffusion limitation in the chain transfer reaction.
