The effect of lindane (58899) on hepatic lipid peroxidation and copper,zinc-superoxide-dismutase (CuZnSOD) activity was studied in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley-rats were injected intraperitoneally (ip) with 60mg/kg lindane. Selected rats were killed immediately or 8, 16, or 24 hours after injection and the livers were removed. The extent of lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring formation of thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances. Total SOD and CuZnSOD activity in the post mitochondrial supernatant was determined by colorimetric techniques. Lindane induced 30% increases in lipid peroxidation 14 and 24 hours after injection. The increases were statistically significant. Neither total SOD nor CuZnSOD activity was affected by lindane whether expressed on a per gram liver or per gram protein basis. The authors conclude that lindane when given ip to rats does not significantly affect hepatic CuZnSOD activity despite its induction of lipid peroxidation. The explanation for this unexpected finding which contradicts the results of previous studies which found that lindane decreases SOD activity is not clear.
