Arsenic-bearing tailings dump is the primary contamination source of soils and stream sediments around the Myungbong Au mine in Korea. The elevated As concentrations in paddy field and farmland soils have been developed in nearby tailings dump. A sequential extraction analysis of tailings, soils and sediments shows the potential release of As into the ecosystem despite of the retention of As by adsorption of Fe-, Ca-, and Al-associated fractions. Arsenic is predicted to be bioavailable and toxic in the reservoir of tailings dump and is being dispersed through a chemical transport by oxidation of tailings.
