Before 1980, polymer scientists were somewhat unfamiliar with the application of fluorescence spectroscopy to their systems compared with biochemists, who had been using fluorescence spectroscopy for decades for detecting very small amounts of chromophores in biomaterials in various environments. However, the use of fluorescence spectroscopy to elucidate the dynamics and microstructure of polymers is rapidly increasing in the polymer community. In this review we describe recent developments in the application of fluorescence spectroscopy to the study of the dynamics and intermolecular interactions of gels, polyimides and liquid crystalline polymers in the solid state. These studies demonstrate that fluorescence spectroscopy is emerging as an innovative technique, capable of elucidating the molecular behaviour of polymers.
