Abstract
Through conduction of heat from food being heated in microwave ovens, plasticizers in plastic containers and wraps are often released from the plastic into the food. Some plasticizers can cause undesirable side effects in animal tissue, and recent quantification efforts indicate that plasticizers released from one type of plastic constitute about 23% of the total plastic wrap weight. Food handlers should be informed of this potential problem and only plastic materials approved for microwave heating should be used.
