Abstract
Headspace gas chromatographic analysis with a fused silica capillary CPsil 8 CB column was examined for the quantitative determination of 1,4-dioxane in cosmetic products. Relation between chromatographic peak areas and 1,4-dioxane added in various concentrations is linear between 40 and 400 mg/kg. Average recovery of 1,4-dioxane was 100.7% with a standard deviation of 6.3 and a coefficient of variation of 6.2% for a blank shampoo fortified at 200 mg/kg level. The detection limit of the method was 2 mg/kg. Cosmetic products were found to contain from less than 2 to 613 mg/kg 1,4-dioxane.
