The authors report successful preliminary experiments on the nitrate-assisted anaerobic degradation of ethylene glycols and detergents with molecular weights of 300 or less. Success in batch cultures was measured by increases in cell counts, by the release of carbon dioxide indicating attack on the substrate, and by the liberation of nitrogen indicating denitrification. 55 per cent diethylene glycol removal could be achieved, even though these preliminary experiments were not designed for quantitative efficiency.
