Asbestiform fiber concentrations from less than 0.1 million/l to 87.3 million/l were measured in the open waters of Lake Superior during 1973. The most commonly occurring mineral fiber was chrysotile, although fibers of the amphibole mineral cummingtonite were found in the Western arm of Lake Superior near the reserve mining tailings dumping site at Silver Bay, Minnesota. Tests suggest that the breadth of the area where the fibers were dumped does not extend far into the lake, and that the area decreases from June-November. Rivers flowing into Lake Superior had low chrysotile fiber concentrations (below 8 million/1), as did samples taken in the spring of 1974 from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
