Abstract
The Johns-Manville Corp., the noncommunist world's largest asbestos producer, currently faces more than 1500 lawsuits brought by people stricken with asbestosis, a disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. Attempts by Johns-Manville to induce the federal government to cut off future lawsuits are described. The health and litigation problems caused by asbestos production have forced Johns-Manville and other asbestos producers to diversify operations. Much of the litigation has stemmed from shipyard workers who were exposed to asbestos during world war II. The U.S. Nat'l Cancer Inst. claims that cancer deaths related to asbestosis may reach 2 million. A major consideration in the litigation against Johns-Manville is whether or not the company was aware of the dangers of asbestos before warning labels were put on products in 1964.
