Abstract
Large-scale discrete element simulations, combined finite-discrete element simulations as well as a whole range of related problems, involve a large number of separate bodies that interact with each other and in general deform and fracture. In this context there is a need for a robust fracture algorithm applicable to simultaneous multiple fracturing of large numbers of bodies. In this work a fracture model for both initiation and propagation of mode I loaded cracks in concrete in the context of the combined finite-discrete element method is reported. The algorithm is based on accurate approximation of experimental stress-strain curves for concrete in tension. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
