Abstract
Carbon block filters are unique in how they combine mechanical filtration, chemical reaction and physical adsorption. Particles, turbidity, asbestos and microscopic cysts are mechanically strained by the densely compacted carbon, while dissolved impurities are adsorbed to the carbon surface by electrokinetic forces. Most carbon block filters remove a wide range of contaminants such as lead, asbestos, turbidity, microscopic cysts, certain pesticides, trihalomethanes and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Most also remove chlorine efficiently. The capacity of carbon block filters varies depending on the density and size of the filter. Capacity may also be limited by mechanical filtration of contaminants which clog the filter.
