As traditional asbestos defendants, like asbestos manufacturers or companies that make insulation, have gone bankrupt, plaintiffs' lawyers have looked elsewhere, seeking to persuade juries that the new defendants should be held liable. On Friday, a jury in Madison County, Ill., ordered U.S. Steel to pay $250 million to Roby Whittington, a 70-year-old former employee who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer associated with exposure to asbestos fibers. The verdict included $50 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages. Last Wednesday, a Manhattan jury awarded $47 million to Robert Croteau, a 53-year-old former utility worker who has been told he has mesothelioma. Mr. Croteau, who lives in Pottstown, Pa., worked on plants owned by Consolidated Edison and the Long Island Lighting Company, which is now owned by KeySpan.
