Brilliant Green-hydrogen phthalate ion-pair in nitrobenzene with poly(vinyl chloride) support was used to prepare a liquid membrane electrode. The electrode was found to respond to perchlorate (2×10-5-0.1 mol 1-1), iodide (2×10-5-0.1 mol 1-1), saccharin (1×10-4-0.1 mol 1-1), and hydrogen phthalate (1×10-5-0.1 mol 1-1) ions with sub-Nernstian slopes. The potential responses to the four ions were fast (<1 min) and independent of pH over wide ranges except for hydrogen phthalate for which the pH response range was 3-4. The selectivity coefficients of the electrode for several anions have been determined and the selectivity order showed strong correlation with hydration energy and ionic radius. The electrode was applied to the determination of perchlorate, iodide, saccharin, and hydrogen phthalate in aqueous solutions with reasonable precision and accuracy.
