Using mobile phone while driving would lead distraction, and drivers may use compensatory behavior (such as: reducing the speed, shortening conversation time, etc.) to recover the damage caused by the distraction. People engaged in compensatory behavior related to their compensatory beliefs. This paper aimed at developing compensatory beliefs scale, explored how compensatory beliefs affect compensatory behavior in driving field. In the first phase, a sample of 163 participants completed a demographic questionnaire and compensatory beliefs scale. In the second phase, another 142 participants completed compensatory beliefs scale and driving behavior questionnaire including frequency of mobile phone utilization and compensatory behavior. Drawing on empirical research, we suggested that the compensatory beliefs scale has been found to show satisfactory validity and reliability. Furthermore, compensatory beliefs were significantly associated with frequency of mobile phone use and compensatory behavior. The survey results provide a new perspective for studying how to activate compensatory beliefs in the future.
