Abstract
Darns are structures constructed in earth, concrete or masonry across rivers to store water for utilisation in Irrigation, Power generation, Industry or Public Health purposes. A dam like a building requires proper upkeep and maintenance. Periodical inspection of the dam components in all respects and search for possible defects or deficiencies is a necessity to detect any shortcomings and to take prompt remedial measures to overcome the same. The present article deals with Sriram Sagar Project where there are two dams, viz., Pochampad dam and Lower Manair Dam. Dam Safety Panel consisting of eminent and experienced engineers and geologists visit the dams periodically and submit reports to Government and World Bank, as the work on the project is going on with World Bank assistance. The points enumerated in the reports as detailed in the following pages give indication as to the details which have to be reviewed in dam inspections. Dam inspection goes a long way in keeping the dam in a healthy condition and for ensuring long term durability and efficient working.
