Abstract
There is currently much emphasis on the reduction of the energy used in lighting; however, at the same time there is also emphasis on improving the quality of lighting in schools as it is believed that this will improve the educational experience of the pupils. Saving energy is currently being promoted very heavily with a series of regulations emanating from the EU and National Governments this pressure may lead some people to neglect the quality of the lighting provided. This paper reports the energy aspects of a study into the impact of different lighting systems in a primary school. The study also looked at the academic performance of the pupils, their levels of cortisol and melatonin, and their mood alertness, this is reported separately. The paper shows that the use of lighting controls permits the use of higher levels of light within the classroom without consuming significantly more energy.
