Abstract
Quercetin, the most powerful flavonoid, antioxidant and phytoestrogen found in fruits and vegetables, has unique biological properties that may improve benefits to overall health and disease resistance. Considering bone, it should have a positive effect on bone metabolism. Nevertheless, the effect of quercetin on bone microstructure is still not sufficiently explained. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of quercetin administration on quantitative 3D characteristics of both compact and trabecular bone tissues in 5-months-old rabbits. Twenty rabbits of both sexes were randomly divided into four groups of five animals each (3 females and 2 males in all groups). Quercetin was applied intramuscularly in various doses: 10 mu g/kg bw in the E1 group, 100 mu g/kg bw in the E2 group, and 1000 mu g/kg bw in the E3 group for 90 days, three times per week. Five animals from the control group were intramuscularly administrated with physiological saline solution. Quantitative 3D characteristics of compact and trabecular bone tissues were determined using microcomputed tomography. In the compact bone tissue, relative bone volume, bone mineral density, relative bone volume without marrow cavity, bone surface without marrow cavity and cortical bone thickness were measured. In the trabecular bone tissue, relative bone volume, trabecular number, trabecular thickness, trabecular separation and bone surface were documented. According to our results, quercetin application had no significant effect on all measured parameters of both compact and trabecular bone tissues. The results also did not depend on the sex of analysed rabbits.
