EDOUARD DESOR, born in Friedrichsdorf/Ts. near Frankfurt/Main in 1881, died in Nice in 1882, was descended from a Huguenot family from southern France. In 1839 he started his natural studies in ''AGASSIZ' scientific factory with joint property'', together with C. VOGT and A. GRESSLY. Later he accompanied AGASSIZ to North America, where because of sharp differences of opinion they separated. DESOR then obtained an appointment in the Coastal Survey. He discovered in nemertines what since then has been called DESOR's Larva. He participated in the revision of the geological survey of the Michigan Peninsula. He was recalled to Neuchatel in 1852 by the illness of his brother and soon became Professor of Geology at the Academy. Following the death of his brother, as heir he became economically independent. During the summer months he took pleasure in receiving scientists, poets, artists and politicians in his country house at Combe-Varin in Val des Ponts, 15 km west of Neuchatel. As a unique guest book, DESOR painted his visitors' names on different trees. The 80 names have been constantly repainted, so the Allee des Naturalistes has been kept fresh up to the present day. - Even though an autodidact, DESOR became an eminent scientist on account of his glacial studies as well as work in other fields of geology, palaeontology, zoology and prehistory - a universal scholar!
