Abstract
Fire plays a critical role in the structure of a wide variety of ecosystems worldwide. This text presents an in-depth review of the role of fire in the forest ecosystems of Washington, Oregon, and northern California, USA, although much of the information is broadly applicable. It is intended as a reference for wildland managers and as a text for anyone needing information on the ecological, historical, cultural, and political perspectives of forest fires and their management. Chapter topics include fire effects on vegetation and the environment, investigative methods, and detailed coverage of the major forest types, including sitka spruce, Pacific and red fir, mixed conifer, ponderosa and lodgepole pine, and subalpine systems. The text is illustrated and closes with a glossary, a list of over 800 references, and an index.
