Pediatric environmental health research raises unique ethical issues because of children's legal and social vulnerability and the inextricable involvement of guardians and families in the participation consent process and data collection. The value of pediatric environmental health science data for effective policy depends on the implementation of ethical procedures fitted to children's consent capacities, respect for family decision-making traditions, and sensitivity to family contextual issues involved in exposure and vulnerability to environmental toxins. Community consultation can produce sound evidence on which to meet the ideals of environmental justice, protection of participant and family privacy, and respect for their information needs. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
