A study measured the excretion in breast milk losses of taurine (a growth modulator and possible membrane stabilizer, and a derivative of cysteine) in omnivore and vegan/vegetarian women during pregnancy and lactation, relative to other amino acids. While the excretion of other amino acids increased during pregnancy, taurine excretion declined markedly from week 9 of preganacy in all subjects, and its excretion declined even further in vegan/vegetarian women during lactation. The results indicate that decreased taurine excretion during preganacy and lactation is related to fetal development and neonate nutritional requirements. (wz)
