Abstract
Puberty is a stormy period of life when mammals sexually mature and become independent. One of the puberty’s main hallmarks is reactivation (in males) or activation (in females) of gonads, triggering the final sexual development. This includes the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics such as beard and deep voice in boys and the growth of breast and start of menstrual cycling in girls. During puberty, a massive remodeling of the brain also occurs. This is responsible for the teenagers’ specific behavioral characteristics such as strong impulsivity, low inhibition and low aversion to risks, and strong vulnerability to risky behaviors, including binge drinking and taking illicit drugs.
