Contraception for the Medically Challenging Patient

Women with chronic medical conditions often require pharmacologic therapy for management of symptoms or control of disease. Certain medications and classes of medications are known to interact with certain hormonal contraceptive methods. An understanding of the pharmacokinetics of synthetic steroid hormones is crucial to understanding these interactions. Drug interactions may decrease the effectiveness of contraceptives, potentially leading to unintended pregnancy. Conversely, drug interactions may decrease the effectiveness of the non-contraceptive medication, potentially leading to suboptimal control of chronic disease. It is important that clinicians understand these interactions so that they can counsel their patients on safe and effective contraceptive options and provide the appropriate medical therapy for chronic disease.
