Abstract
Beginning of the end of the affair with auto-mobility: A contemporary history, circa 1981 onward, provides a brief history of movements related to the creation of livable and complete streets, from the time the first edition was published in 1981, up to the present day. It discusses the movements that led to the beginning of the end of the affair with the auto-mobility paradigm—a fight we still grapple with to this very day. Specifically, this chapter discusses the Smart Growth, Vision Zero, Complete Streets, Critical Mass, and Naked Streets movements. The last part of this chapter includes dialogues on how concepts of “safety” drive the institutional norms, operation and design of our streets, the debate about one-way vs two-way streets, and vehicular cycling and the history of the debate around competing ideologies for planning and designing for bicyclists—essentially asking should a bicyclist be considered more human, or more machine?
