Geology and petrology of the Red Wine alkaline complex, central Labrador

The complex comprises essentially two major plutons and satellitic occurrences of agpaitic rocks, enclosed in peralkaline quartzo-felspathic gneisses. The alkaline rocks consist principally of albite, microcline, arfvedsonitic amphibole, and alkali pyroxenes (M.A. 79-4018). Eudialyte, nepheline, pectolite and aenigmatite are important constituents of many rocks; 40 other minerals, many of them exotic Na-varieties, occur in trace amounts. The alkaline rocks range from ultramafic iron-rich varieties to almost silica- saturated leucosyenite. The peralkaline gneiss chemically resembles peralkaline rhyolites and granites associated with agpaitic igneous complexes. Rocks of the Red Wine complex have been strongly deformed and metamorphosed. Thermodynamic modelling suggest peak metamorphic P of approx 6.5 kbar and T of 625o-675oC, with PH2O > 0.5Ptot and fO2 below the QFM buffer. The age of the Red Wine complex, 1345 + or - 75 m.y., suggests cogenesis with the Gardar rocks of Greenland. Emplacement terminated major igneous activity (Harp Lake anorthosite (M.A. 81-3277) Seal Lake basalts (following abstract)) under tensional conditions. Rock and mineral analyses are tabulated.-T.F.
