Quantitative analysis of herbicides in surface waters by High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) requires a previous specific method of clean-up of the sample. For this purpose the crude extracts are to be separated into single fractions by gradient elution on silica gel columns. Afterwards each fraction must be cleaned over reversed phase material (RP C-8) and then analysed by application of HPLC, using two different columns alternately, i.e. RP C-8 and RP C-18. The minimum detectable concentration is 1 ng of urea herbicides and 1-2 ng of carbamates when the pure substances are used.
