Abstract
1. 1. Rats were treated with isoproterenol (IPR) (7.3 μmol/100 g, i.p.), SC-12937 (SC) (0.52 μmol/100 g, i.p.), or both, for 15 days. 2. 2. IPR induced severe hypertrophy of salivary glands, whereas SC elicited marked reduction of total sterol content in salivary glands, liver, and serum, along with desmosterol accummulation. 3. 3. In the combined treatment, SC antagonized in part the effect of IPR on salivary glands. 4. 4. Although the isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy would appear to be partially dependent upon the nature and/or sterol tissue content, the SC-inhibiting effect on IPR action would be more likely due to the ultrastructural lesions caused by the azasterol. © 1980.
