Pralidoxime chloride is an effective antidote to organophosphate poisoning when it is used with atropine and other supportive measures. At present, it should be used only in cases of acute intoxication and should be given parenterally; its oral or prophylactic use cannot be recommended until further studies are completed. It may also be used as an antagonist to certain carbamate-type anticholinesterases. However, since it is not equally antagonistic to all cholinesterase inhibitors, the possible effectiveness of pralidoxime in counteracting a particular insecticide or drug must be considered individually. © 1965, American Medical Association.
