The Nilwala River in Sri Lanka flows through predominantly agricultural and urbanized areas. The river serves as a major water supply source in southern Sri Lanka. Concentrations of trace organic contaminants were measured in the river. Significant quantities of triphenylphosphate, tributylphosphate, tri-iso-butylphosphate, and tris -2-butoxyethylphosphate were detected. Several halogenated VOCs were also found. Pollution levels in the Nilwala and in Germany's Weser River are compared, and suggestions for implementing routine water monitoring procedures in Sri Lanka are made.
