The Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Europium and Terbium Complexes that Contain Carbazole Groups

A novel carboxylic acid ligand (4-((9H-carbazol-9-yl) methyl) benzoic acid, HCMB) and its corresponding Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes, were synthesized by introducing hole-transporting group and characterized by photophysical studies. We have characterized the ligand by 1HNMR spectra and characterized the Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes by Uv-vis spectra, studied luminescence properties of the Eu3+ complexes. It was shown that the ligand HCMB can sensitize the Eu3+ complex and the emission spectra of Eu3+ complex displayed characteristic luminescence of the Eu3+. But it cannot sensitize the luminescence of Tb3+. The mechanism of luminescence can be discussed based upon the theory of sensitized luminescence.The new europium complexes is valuable for further studying organic electroluminescent devices.
