Two efficient routes starting from 4-carbamoylpiperidine or 2,2',2"-trichlorotriethylamine were developed for preparing 4-cyanoquinuclidine which was hydrolyzed to give 4-carbamoylquinuclidine, a chemical modifier of cephalosporin antibiotics.
