The photostimulated reactions of benzyl chloride with carbazolyl nitrogen anion in dimethyl sulfoxide gave 9-benzylcarbazole and 3-benzylcarbazole. The reactions are suggested in term of S(RN)1 mechanism of nucleophilic substitution.
