Abstract
A method was developed in the attempt to screen and quantitate approximately 150 pesticides and pesticide residues in wines using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selective ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM). A simple procedure was developed requiring poly(divinylbenzene-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) (Oasis® HLB) cartridges for extraction of the pesticides from wines and aminopropyl cartridges topped with magnesium sulfate for sample clean-up. The resulting wine extracts were screened and quantitated by capillary GC-MS-SIM. Spike recoveries greater than 80 and 90% were observed for pesticides spiked at 10 and 100 ppb, respectively, for both red and white wines. The method was applied to screen imported wines for the presence of pesticide residues. Pesticides present in these wines were carbaryl, metalaxyl, procymidone, cyprodinil, oxadixyl, pyrimethanil and myclobutanil at concentrations in the low ppb levels. The method provides an effective screening procedure to identify and quantitate pesticide residues in wines. In addition, data for the development of a pesticide screening procedure for other beverage alcohol products and LC/MS of carbamate pesticides will also be presented.
