Abstract
The ever increasing use of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and food preservatives in both agriculture and industry calls for a careful study of their genetic side effects since ultimately most of them find their way into man and other animals. We have undertaken an intensive study of the genetic effects of some commonly used chemicals using Drosophila, Salmonella and plant test systems. In this communication we report the mitotic effects of the insecticides: summithion, lannate, carbicron, thiodan and kelthane, the fungicides: benlate, diathane M-45 and aladrin and the herbicides: lasso, ramrod, round up and grammoxone. In another communication we report their genetic effects on Drosophila and Salmonella (Gopalan and Njagi 1979, Njagi and Gopalan 1981a and b). In E. coli, summithion, kelthane and diathane M-45 have been shown to induce revertants without metabolic activation (Shirasu et al. 1976). At the histidine loci of Salmonella typhimurium, reversion mutations restoring prototrophy were induced by the same 3 chemicals (Shirasu 1976). In fungi and mammalian systems, information on genetic activity of these chemicals is relatively scarce. Toxicological data shows the Lasso is lethal in rats (LD50 = 1200 mg/kg) and ramrod (LD50 = 380 mg/kg) and round up LD50 = 4900 mg/kg) in rabbits. Information on their chromosome effects is relatively scarce. © 1981, Japan Mendel Society, International Society of Cytology. All rights reserved.
