Abstract
This paper describes a new, patented biocide that controls microbial (MB) populations without the adverse effects associated with strong oxidisers. Traditional oxidising biocides have several problems, the most serious being that they react with fibre, organics and other paper making additives. This low selectivity towards the MB population means that higher addition rates are needed and this reduces the cost effectiveness. The new biocide is based on 'bromide activated chloramine'. The new biocide has a low oxidising potential, similar to a chloramine but is a much stronger biocide at comparable doses. The low oxidising potential means that little of the biocide is lost to reactions with the fibre and fillers and thus has high selectivity towards NIB populations. The result is a biocide that provides excellent cost effective control of microbial populations and quickly degrades into inert compounds before effluent discharge. The mode of action, application technology, and onsite production process of this ammonium bromide-based product are discussed. Included are three case histories to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new biocide. In the first case, the new biocide has been used to significantly reduce the level of volatile fatty acids (VIA) in the effluent of a brown grade mill. The next case demonstrates how the biocide can be used to eliminate outbreak of catalase in the recycled newsprint mill. The last case study shows how the biocide can improve the PM cleanliness and reduce paper breaks.
