Abstract
Yup'ik Eskimos, native to rural Alaska, have gone from a total subsistence diet of fish, game and tundra plants to a modern Western diet, often within a single generation. Because nutritionists are scare in these inaccessible native villages, many younger Eskimos have discarded the best of their traditional diet, high-sugar foods touted on TV and conveniently provided in their bush village stores. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides an excellent framework for introducing improved eating habits to these consumers.
