A big indoor swimming pool complex is currently under construction in Zagreb at the sports & recreation centre situated in the eastern part of the city, at the location previously occupied by old open-air swimming pools which had to be demolished as they were no longer fit for normal use. This was the occasion to say a few words about development of Maksimir Park, which is one of the first public landscape gardens in Europe, and about construction of Maksimir Stadium and the entire sports complex around the stadium. Although this area is crucial for the development of sports activity in Zagreb and Croatia, the fact still remains that it has been developed in a largely unplanned manner. This is especially true for the upgrade of the stadium where the work is still far from completion despite many costly repairs that have been undertaken over their years. Solutions used for the old stadium, which opens towards the south and north, were taken into account during design of the new pool complex. Young designers have defined concrete-made side areas with playgrounds on the roof, and a transparent glassed steel structure above the swimming pool zone. The works are advancing quite well, although some delays may be envisaged as the swimming organization has asked for modification of the initial design.
