The product mixture of the photoinduced butylation of anthracene by the berate salt C4H9B(C6H5)(3) N(C4H9)(4) in acetonitrile and N,N'-dimethylformamide was compared with the product mixture of the reaction of electrogenerated anthracene anion radical with 1-bromobutane. The product mixtures were identical indicating that both reactions proceed through the same radical intermediates.
