New electroluminescent materials based on anthracene chromophore, 9,10-bis [1-(4-methoxy)naphthylethenyl] anthracene (alpha-BNAm) and 9,10-bis[2-(6-methoxy)naphthytethenyl] anthracene (beta-BNAm) were newly synthesized. The anthracene derivatives with bulky substituent possessed high melting point and they gave stable amorphous films through vacuum-sublimation. Two types of electroluminescent devices were fabricated with double layer and triple layer structures:ITO/TPD/emissive layer/MgAg, and ITO/TPD/emissive layer/OXD-7/MgAg, respectively. In the triple layer devices with the emissive layer of alpha-BNAm and beta-BNAm, efficient orange electroluminescence was observed in both types of device: the maximum luminance was about 4,220 cd/m(2) and 13,700 cd/m(2) at an applied voltage of 10 V and 11 V, respectively.
