Abstract
Baltimore Harbor (Baltimore, MD) sediments were utilized to initiate anaerobic enrichment cultures with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under methanogenic conditions. Both naphthalene and phenanthrene showed complete degradation without a lag, but not pyrene. This is the first report confirming that methanogenic cultures are capable of complete PAH degradation.
